Higher Education

Higher Education

As an educator, clinician, with research interests, I am committed to fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment that prepares BSW and MSW students for ethical and effective social work practice. My teaching philosophy ensures that students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for professional success.

I have extensive experience teaching BSW and MSW courses, including case management, clinical practice, and field education. My student-centered approach integrates experiential learning methods such as case-based discussions, role-playing, and applied problem-solving to bridge theory and real-world application and even immersive experiences in the community. Additionally, I have played a key role in curriculum development, refining coursework and field education programs to align with evolving accreditation standards and workforce demands.

Field education is central to social work training, and I have mentored students as both an instructor and site supervisor. I support diverse learners, including first-generation college students and nontraditional students, helping them navigate academic challenges and career pathways. By fostering confidence and leadership, I prepare students to excel in diverse practice settings.

As a teaching-practitioner, I integrate current research into my teaching, drawing from my interdisciplinary work in attachment, generational trauma, and social-emotional intelligence. I model a commitment to lifelong learning, inspiring students to engage in critical thinking and evidence-based practice.

Through innovative teaching, curriculum development, and mentorship, I am dedicated to shaping the next generation of social workers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to create meaningful change in individuals and communities.

With a Bachelor of Science in Health Communications, Master of Social Work and pursing my PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, continued education and professional development is not just a passion of mine but necessary in this field as the populations we serve and their needs grow.

Supervision

Supervision

As a social worker and having 20 years in the field in various settings and roles, I believe in collaboration not competition. I believe in inter-generational and inter-disciplinary learning opportunities. This means I have something to teach just as much as new social workers coming into the field have something to teach as well. When completing my clinical hours, I choose external supervision outside of my place of employment because I wanted to have additional support with unbiased, objective and confidential guidance and I have no regrets in that decision. True leadership to me means teaching, inspiring, and supporting clinical growth to enhance a person's professional and personal life.

My supervision approach is integrative, combining various therapeutic modalities to support supervisees' growth. As the owner and supervising therapist of a private practice and higher education instructor, I emphasize the importance of self-care among mental health professionals, acknowledging that therapists are also human and require support. This philosophy encourages supervisees to engage in self-reflection and personal development, fostering resilience and effectiveness in their practice.

Incorporating external supervision into one's professional routine not only enriches clinical practice but also promotes personal well-being, leading to more effective and ethical service delivery.

Supervision Details

ADVANTAGES:

  • Objective Perspective: An external supervisor brings an impartial viewpoint, free from internal organizational dynamics, allowing for candid discussions about challenges and ethical dilemmas.

  • Confidentiality: External supervision ensures a safe space for practitioners to explore sensitive issues without fear of workplace repercussions, promoting honest self-reflection.

  • Professional Development: External supervisors often possess diverse expertise, offering tailored guidance that enhances a social worker's skills and knowledge base.

  • Emotional Support: Discussing work-related stressors with an external supervisor can help mitigate burnout and compassion fatigue, contributing to overall well-being.

  • Ethical Guidance: External supervisors provide assistance in navigating complex ethical situations, ensuring adherence to professional standards when conflicts arise with agency policies and the ethical code.
